Garuda Indonesia is Indonesia’s national airline. Garuda is the name of the vehicle of Lord Vishnu’s ride in ancient Indian mythology. On December 25, 1949 , a representative from KLM who was also a friend of President Soekarno , Dr. Konijnenburg, faced and reported to the president in Yogyakarta that KLM Interinsulair Bedrijf would be handed over to the government in accordance with the results of the Round Table Conference (KMB) and asked him to give a name to the company because the plane that would take it from Yogyakarta to Jakarta would be painted according to that name .

Responding to this, President Soekarno answered the question by quoting a line from a Dutch poem composed by a famous poet, Raden Mas Noto Soeroto in the colonial era which contained, Ik ben Garuda, Vishnoe’s vogel, die zijn vleugels uitslaat hoog boven uw eilanden (“I am Garuda, the bird belonging to Lord Vishnu who spreads wings soaring high above your islands”).

So on December 28, 1949, historic flights using DC-3 aircraft by registering the KLM PK-DPD Interinsulair flight brought President Soekarno from Yogyakarta to Jakarta to attend his inauguration ceremony as President of the Republic of Indonesia (RIS) under the name Garuda Indonesian Airways, given by President Soekarno to this first airline company.

In line with the ongoing transformation and service improvement program, Garuda Indonesia was chosen as the winner of the “Passenger Choice Awards 2014” for the “Best in Region: Asia and Australasia” category for two consecutive years from the “Airline Passenger Experience Association” (APEX ) – an association of enhancing aviation services – based in New York, United States. Previously, in September 2013 Garuda was also named “Best in Region: Asia and Australasia” in the “Passenger Choice Award 2013” event.

The “Best in Region: Asia and Australasia” award was received by the Service Director of PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. Faik Fahmi in the event “Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) Award Ceremony” which took place in Anaheim, California, United States, on Monday (15/9) evening local time.

In the award ceremony, Garuda Indonesia managed to surpass four other airlines which were announced as Best in Region: Asia and Australasia finalists, namely: Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Korean Air, and EVA.

In addition to winning the Best in Region: Asia and Australasia category, in the same award event Garuda Indonesia was also selected as the “Top 5 Airlines with Best Overall Passenger Experience” and also “Top 5 Airlines with Best Inflight Video”, together with Emirates, Virgin America, Norwegian, and Ethiopian Airlines.

Garuda Indonesia was also selected in the “Top 5 Airlines with Best Cabin Ambiance” together with Virgin America, Austrian Airlines, El Al Israel Airlines, and Air Transat, as well as “Top 5 Airlines with Best Food and Beverage, together with Emirates, Turkish Airlines, El Al Israel Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines.

Thanks to the commitment of the management and employees of Garuda Indonesia to continue to provide the best, Garuda Indonesia‘s performance is gradually being recognized at the international level. At the “Farnborough International Airshow” aerospace exhibition in England on July 15, 2014, Garuda Indonesia again won an international award and was named airline with “The World’s Best Cabin Crew 2014” from Skytrax – an independent flight rating agency based in London, beating other nominations, namely Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways.

Garuda Indonesia in 2014 was also included in the ranks of “The World’s Top 10 Airlines” and was ranked 7th, up from the 8th rank in the previous year. Meanwhile, in the “Paris Air Show” aerospace exhibition in June 2013, Garuda Indonesia also received the award “The World’s Best Economy Class”

The world recognition of Garuda Indonesia is increasingly encouraging the company to continue the transformation and expansion program “Quantum Leap 2011 – 2015”.
