The dead sea is a giant lake stretching from Israel, Palestine, and Jordan. The total area of the dead sea reaches 810 square kilometers with a length of 67 kilometers and a width of 17 kilometers. The dead sea is at the point 417.5 meters below sea level which makes this lake the lowest point on earth.
The beginning of the name of the dead sea was based on the Hebrew language, Yam Ha Maved, which means a killer sea, Arabs often referred to it as Bahrul Mayyit which meant the dead sea. Naming the dead sea refers to the absence of living things that can survive in their waters. This is because the dead sea has a very high salt content of 32%, ten times higher than normal sea salt levels in general, which is around 3%. The very high salt content makes anyone who soaks in the dead sea will float.
Dead sea mud is believed by the community to have an effect to beautify the skin. The high mineral content in the mud will repair damaged skin cells and nourish the skin. Even King Solomon, Queen Cleopatra, and the Great Heroides during his lifetime used dead sea mud to beautify his skin.
Geologically the dead sea formed about three million years ago after small cracks appeared in the Jordan River Valley ( Jordan Rift Valley ). These cracks make sea water enter and collect until a lake is created. The dry climate and high evaporation cause an increase in mineral content in the soil. Salt, lime and gypsum along the cracks cause the salt content in the lake waters to increase dramatically.
